Fuselage: Longerons & Aft Section

January 28, 2006: (3.0 hrs.)  Yesterday when I assembled the aft fuselage, I neglected to cut the J-Stiffeners to length and insert those, so I did that first thing this morning.  These J-Stiffeners act as stringers along the fuselage adding strength.

Next I had to make sure there was no twist front to back on the aft section.  Here I am using a level across the side skins, a plumb bob hanging down from the the F-706 bulkhead center tooling hole, and a SmartTool digital protractor clamped to the vertical bell crank rib.

When things are level and plumb back to front,  the match drilling can begin.
Match drilling the skin to the J-Stiffeners.
With everything drilled, the whole assembly comes apart.
Onto hole deburring.  Here I am deburing a J-Stiffeners.... Note the funky cut on the end of the J-Stiffener.  These get made on both ends of the bottom and upper J-Channels so that they can fit snugly against the bulkheads where they end.

I also deburred all the bulkheads.

Deburring the edges of the J-Stiffeners on the ScotchBrite wheel.
Dimpling the J-Stiffeners.

I also dimpled all the bulkheads.

This is the tail cone getting dimpled.  This skin is probably right on the margin of being thick enough to countersink and thin enough to dimple.  I opted to dimple because it is easier and looks better.  I used my tank dimple dies on along the edges where the skin mates with the side skins and bottom skin.  The tank dimple dies make a slightly deeper dimple.  This should help the parts mate better.
January 29 2006: (3.0 hrs.) Used the soldering iron trick on all the skins to remove just the plastic from the rivet lines.

Next I deburred all the skin holes

Deburring the skin edges with a ScotchBrite wheel in by die griner.
Used this hand seemer tool along the bottom edge of the side skins.  This should make the skin overlap joint have a nice tight fit
Dimpled all the skins.

Now everything is ready for prep and priming.  I think I will prime the bottom skins of the aft section, just to add a little bit more protection.
