Wings: Tips

September 27 - October 5, 2008: (8.0 hrs.)

My hangar is almost complete, and with the cold weather coming, I thought it might be nice to move my wings to the hangar to make room for my truck in the garage.  Before I move the wings, I want all the work remaining to be completed.

Here I have begun fitting the wing tips.  This involved removing some material from the inboard trailing edge to provide clearance from the aileron.  I then aligned the tips with the ailerons in their neutral position, and taped things in place so I could begin match drilling the attach holes.

Here are all the holes match drilled and cleco'd.
Next, I made some .025" aluminum strips to act as reinforcement for the nut-plates that will be attached on the inside of the tips.

Here I have match drilled the nut-plates to the wing tip and its reinforcement strip along the top surface.  Next the bottom surface was done, and then the same was done on the second wing tip.  Lot's of nut-plates!  I think 80 in total.

Next, I installed the wing tip ribs to close out the area adjacent to the ailerons.  I installed these ribs 'reversed', to get a cleaner closed out surface.  The only disadvantage to doing it this way, is that you need to use blind rivets to secure the ribs.
In the left wing tip I installed the Bob Archer VOR antenna.  It is attached under 4 of the wing tip nut plates.  I also laid some fiberglass up over a few areas of the antenna to keep it flat (not shown in the picture).
Next, I enlarged the holes along the outboard wing skins and dimpled them to receive a #6 countersunk screws.
